Obituary of William Robert MCINTYRE
October 3, 1924 – February 5, 2012
Bill McIntyre of Calgary, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Rockyview General Hospital, at the age of 87 years.
Bill was born on October 3, 1924 in Brantford, Ontario to Edward and Gertrude McIntyre. He attended schools in Brantford. Bill served time in the war from 1943 to 1946 with the R.C.A.F. Following wartime service, he attended University of Toronto for his B.A. in 1948 and Master of Commerce in 1950. He was a merchandise manager for The Bay in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary from 1950 – 1975 and from 1975 to 2001 he became self-employed selling gift and tableware lines throughout Western Canada. Bill represented some of the top giftware companies in Canada. He thoroughly enjoyed the sales profession and made many friends in the retail industry. In 1950, Bill married Dorothy Eleanor Carmichael, and they had two children, John Edward, and Susan Elizabeth. After Dorothy’s passing, Bill and Mary Coulter met, and they married in 1972. This was truly a wonderful marriage.
Bill had a true passion for trains, and was a ferroequinologist (lover of the iron horse). He was a member of several railway societies. He was a Past President and life member of the Gyro Club Of Calgary and was awarded the Gyro Order of Merit for his volunteer work at Emily Follonsbee School. Bill was a volunteer for 23 years with the Calgary Stampede and truly enjoyed this association. He was a member of the Glencoe Club, Canadian Club of Calgary, and a life time member of the United Church of Canada. Bill joined the volunteer citizen board of Calgary Family Services in 2002. Bill was a major support to the large staff of community caregivers that the Agency employed. In 2010 Bill chaired the 100th Anniversary Committee, celebrating the establishment of Calgary Family Services. Bill was an active member of Scarboro United Church participating on several committees, as well several other not-for-profit organizations, including Governor’s Council.
Bill is survived by son John McIntyre (Rhonda Trundle), daughter Susan Busser (Paul), daughter-in-law Zahra Coulter, Mary’s daughter Kathy Cameron (Murray) and several grandchildren Christie Tolsma (Logan), Allison McIntyre, Jennifer and Kaitlyn Busser, Ken Coulter (Jaehee), Yasi Coulter (Mehrzad), Andrea Coulter and Arnie and Heidi Rotenburger.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Edward and Gertrude McIntyre, his first wife Dorothy McIntyre, his second wife Mary McIntyre, Mary’s son Ken Coulter and daughter Karen Coulter, his brother Ellis McIntyre and his sisters Lillian Spencer and Norma Preece and an infant brother Martin McIntyre.
Funeral Services will be held at Scarboro United Church, (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
