I knew Layne for all of 3+ years directly, but in the blink of an eye an entire lifetime in terms of connecting to a like-minded soul. Growing up in the early years of the audio-visual world in Calgary brought early and long standing connections. He was one of those souls that was an "instant connection" and a complete individual that knew when to give and feed off the energy in any given situation. He read me like a book. An "instant connection" it seems these days is rare. He was such a genuine soul, so beyond facades and BS pretenses, and obviously why I gravitated to him like a long-lost brother whenever I had the privilege to work with him...license to be as silly and juvenile as I (we) wanted to be on any given set-up, operate, strike. Travel and stories were our commonality. It is very difficult to speak about Layne in the past tense...Layne is the embodiment of embracing the moment, living and expressing oneself through life accordingly. An absolute wicked awesome storyteller...an absolute hard working nose-to-the-grindstone individual...the person you always want to have a beer with after any shift! The picture I have attached was prior to your battle, in Sept of 2018...being silly and shooting the shit on a snippet of a break on a beautiful day outside on Stephen Avenue...which seems like yesterday. Despite the reality, it makes me smile knowing you gave it your all to fight such a horrible battle. My thoughts and prayers are with you Layne and your awesome family, which my wife and I were privileged to meet on the Calgary leg of the Peters Tour Nov 2018...you got us back stage access to a show I couldn't believe your parents hadn't seen until then...and we saw how proud they were of you! I am proud and honoured to know that I spent quality time with you in and out of our work setting...my family as well! My son said you do a better German accent than I do! You do! You are and will forever be missed! The wings in the picture and you hamming it up say it all...you are Free of this mortal coil! Fly my friend!
